Jaake has been to Sunderland today to meet Bailey, an 8-month-old Cocker x Springer Spaniel for his 1st session.

We are working with Bailey for a number of reasons, mainly stealing items and running away with them, even sometimes eating them. Bailey is also quite nervous when meeting new people and needs a little help building his confidence. We will also cover loose lead walking and recall in future sessions.
Bailey has previously seen another trainer for his lead pulling who advised using a slip lead so we discussed today the implications of using equipment that causes pain and discomfort and the potential fallout from using these techniques.
Today we worked on some games to get Bailey to engage with his owners when out and about and some other foundation exercises to get Bailey and his owners used to have fun with training. We also looked at teaching Bailey a solid drop which he was nailing today and ways in which we can exchange items he has stolen without having to wrestle them from his mouth.
Bailey is a super smart pup and will come on leaps and bounds with his training.

Jaake’s first session with Poor Bunny Bailey in Sunderland focused on understanding Bailey’s behaviour and setting positive foundations for future training. The main issues identified were item stealing and running away with objects, occasional eating of stolen items, and nervousness around new people. Rather than using force or discomfort-based equipment like a slip lead, the session emphasised kind, reward-based methods and explained the potential negative effects of pain-based techniques. Through engagement games and fun foundation exercises, Bailey began to build better focus on his owners, showed increased confidence, and successfully learned a reliable “drop” behaviour.
