Our reactive dog intensive course is to help you and your dog get the most out of their training in a short period of time.
Usually, dogs react due to either fear, over-excitement or panic.
- Fear: with this, they are scared of the other dog or scared of the potential danger another dog can possess, often related to previous trauma - usually they work out that if they look scary enough, the other dog won't come over to them. This is also similar to panic, where they fear that they will lose control of a situation, similar to a panic attack in humans. In this case, we look to help your dog learn that they don't have to react to make other dogs move away, and where possible turn the experience of seeing other dogs into a positive one.
- Over-excitement: with this, they want to get to the other dog. Being stuck on the lead and unable to do this creates frustration which then turns to rage, which is when they start to bark and lunge. Kind of like road rage - we want to get somewhere and there's a car in front stopping us. We get frustrated, then we move beyond that to rage when we react. Here we need to help them to engage with us, ask for permission and finally deal with their frustration in a more appropriate manner.
As with any emotion, changing this can take time. This course is designed to get you off to the best start with your dog training and give you a lot of support in a short period of time.
Having your mechanics and timing right can really turbocharge your dog training, and this is not something you can learn in just 1 session.
With this course, you will get a weekly 1 to 1 session with our behaviourist who will be working under vet referral. You will get weekly sessions for the first 4 weeks, at which point they will switch to fortnightly sessions for the next 4 weeks. This means that you will get a total of 6 sessions within 8 weeks.
During these sessions, we can help you and your dog and provide controlled setups where your dog can learn the appropriate behaviour with the least distractions and the least chance of it going wrong with another dog running up to them.
For our training plan, we use the Humane Hierarchy along with least intrusive, minimally aversive protocols, and we will always check you are happy with a method before its used.
This package is for dogs whose only issue is that they react towards other dogs and who are fit and healthy enough to undertake the training program.
