This is the lovely Benji, we originally met him via zoom a few months ago during a lockdown where we got some nice foundations in place.
Benji is a 7-year-old Romanian rescue that has clearly had a rough time, he has part of his ear missing and scars all over his body.
Despite this, he is a lovely dog.
He has a real fear of people, however, would rather avoid them rather than interacting or barking/lunging.
Benji does have a bite history, this is when people have been in his home and made sudden and unexpected movements, his behavior is driven by fear of the people.
Here’s what we did:
In the first session, we built up his foundation training. Teaching simple things like sit, down, and hand touch can really build your relationship and grow the bone you have.
Taught Benji to follow the food, before this he would just stand and was too nervous to try anything.
Confidence-building games to help him with noises, movement, and trying new things.
This time, we worked on his fear of people directly. Our aim here is to pair people with his favorite treat being delivered from his guardians. To do this, we taught him to look at people when we said “look” then when he does, mark and treat.
Over time, Benji will start to get excited when people approach without feeling any pressure to interact with them.
Benji and his guardians are doing really well and Benji has his perfect forever home.
Well done guys!
