Jackson the Border Terrier with Unique Behavior Issues

Updated: Jun 2, 2021

The cute little Border Terrier.

Jackson has some unique behavior issues.

First, he dislikes flat-face dogs, just the flat-faced ones. So we started teaching him some focus games then started to counter condition to flat-faced dogs predict good things.

Second, he reacts to 1 yellow van. Just 1. No other yellow vans, not the driver of the van, and no other traffic. Just this one van opposite his house. We started counter-conditioning to this and had him even doing some scent work around the wheels of it.

Third, he reacts to flashing lights while in the car, Break lights, pelican crossings, etc. He also barks every time the car stops. This is a more difficult one to solve as you can’t work with a dog while driving for obvious reasons. Pretty simple solution, we blocked his view and replaced the excitement of the car stops being linked with a walk to getting a calm kong/chew instead.

We still have a little bit of work to do with flat-nosed dogs, but the other 2 issues should be well on their way to being resolved.

Well done Jackson and co, see you soon!
