Excessive Barking

Updated: Jun 9, 2023

Jaake has been back to Ryton to visit Ralph, a 12-month-old Miniature Poodle.

We were called in because Ralph was barking at the sound of any noise outside of the house. His barking was intense and lasted for a long period of time and it was happening multiple times throughout the day. The doorbell and the postman were the biggest triggers and this would then cause Ralph to bark at pretty everything for the rest of the day.

It is important to remember that dogs bark and whilst we aren’t aiming to stop it completely, the aim here was to help Ralph calm down and reduce the frequency, intensity, and duration of the barking.

We have made some changes to Ralph’s environment and taught him some alternative behaviors when he hears certain noises. He no longer barks at the postman and quickly comes away from whatever he is barking at to his owners and they are able to settle him down. The frequency, intensity, and duration of Ralph’s barking have reduced 10-fold. Well done guys.

We have also taught Ralph to go to his bed at the sound of the doorbell instead of barking at the door. Ralph nailed this today and is going from strength to strength with his training.

Well done to Ralph’s owners, their training skills were looking super sharp today.
