By specialising in the use of scent work, I help the dog to use their main natural sense (nose) for mental stimulation and enrichment. This especially helps reactive/sensitive dogs build their confidence and redirect their focus. I have completed my Master Course in Aggression in dogs and mentored by world-renowned aggression expert, Michael Shikashio, which gives me a wide knowledge of different forms of aggression in dogs.

Reactive/sensitive dogs are a particular passion for me and not only have I focussed my professional studies around this subject, but I also have personal experience of living with an anxious and reactive dog. Working with a force-free approach (I do not use any force or physical discipline in my training), I use a calm, relaxed, and patient manner to provide the most benefit to the dog and avoid stressing them.

Dog Trainer and Behaviourist

In early 2018 I left my job as a receptionist and set out to be a dog groomer. Working with dogs has always been a dream of mine. It was either work with dogs or become an artist, I figured grooming was a perfect mix of creativity and cuddles!

Once I became a certified groomer, I wanted to be the best groomer I could be, so started learning about dog behaviour. Many of the dogs I was seeing were scared, and I disagreed with some of the common techniques used to "get the job done".

From studies, I learned that there was a better way of grooming dogs, and many groomers across the World had started implementing Fear Free techniques to help the dog feel better about grooming. I became Fear Free certified, and I am currently the only groomer in the North East with this certification.

I was hooked on learning about dogs, so I began volunteering at puppy classes in South Shields and Blaydon, shadowing some of the best trainers in the North East and learning practical skills to pair with my academic study. I knew that training was something I wanted to pursue.

With time and experience, I was soon running puppy classes on my own, and not long after having 1:1 consultations! I did an intense 6 month training course to become a certified dog trainer, and have gone on to gain Specialist Certification in Canine Body Language, Scentwork, Reactivity and Puppies.

I'm really passionate about working with dogs and children, as I have a 4 year old daughter and 5 year old bulldog and know the struggle of managing children around dogs. A busy family dynamic is something I can relate to!

I got into dog behaviour when I rescued my first dog Bear he didn't have any training, displayed most dog behaviour problems and was scared of half of life. We were turned down for classes because of his behaviour which made me determined to prove them wrong. I started learning about dog behaviour but the more I learnt the more I became fascinated in the subject. I started my journey academically completing a Foundation Diploma in Canine Behaviour Training, then went onto complete the Advanced Diploma in Canine Behaviour and Management in 2016. Through this time me & Bear worked upto a Gold in the Good Citizen Dog Scheme through the Kennel Club. I also began volunteering for Blue Cross as an Educational Speaker.
To date I have-
Currently studying Bsc Canine Behaviour at Bishop Burton
Completed FdSc Canine Behaviour and Training in 2021
Member of Pet Professional Guild & The Pet Professional Network
Approved Instructor through Dog Training College
Student member of APBC and ASAB
Accredited Detection Dog Handler and Scentwork Instructor through the UK College of Scent Dogs
Assistance Dog Trainer for Pawsable (Owner Trained Assistance Dogs)
However my passion always stayed with separation anxiety and being able to help owners achieve a happy balanced life with their dogs using force free methods that are proven to work. I have dedicated my life to being able to help owners with dogs that are otherwise considered write offs.
Every dog and every owner is capable of change with the right guidance and support.

My name is Jaake. I am a Dog Trainer and have been working for The Dog Trainers since January 2022. Dogs have always been a major part of my life. As a young boy, I used to get dragged to training classes by my father who took part in tracking events and obedience with our Dobermans. Even at a young age, I remember thinking about the way they used to train dogs and found it quite distressing. As a young adult with my first dog, I questioned these methods further after attending a class that used aversive methods. I didn't enjoy the class and neither did my dog. I soon learned the key to a beautiful human-dog relationship lies in the way we treat them. I strongly advocate only using force-free, ethical methods and we should only ever treat our dogs with patience, kindness, and love.

The first time I encountered behavoural issues with my own dogs was when we rescued our Lurcher puppy, Athena, this year. She was found abandoned in a box at 8 weeks old and she came to us with severe separation anxiety. Whilst this has taken a lot of work I am pleased to say we have completely resolved it and she is now happy and relaxed on her own. She has become reactive to some people and other dogs and we have been working hard to help her with this and we have been having great success. She can now relax in the presence of unknown dogs but occasionally we have an incident where she reacts.

Working with dogs professionally has always been a lifelong ambition of mine. Since working with The Dog Trainers I have undertaken a large number of courses and strive to be the best I can be so I can help as many people and dogs as possible.

Nathan Leighton

Dog Trainer and Behaviourist

I've always been interested in dog training and behaviour and have had family dogs since I was small. I started my dog training journey helping train working sheepdogs when I was 15. This led me to read Domesticated Animal Science at university. My passion for dog training came to life when I got my first own dog as he was a nervous rescue who didn't trust people due to how he had been treated. Working with him to build his confidence we ended up taking part in agility competitions which he loved! My next dog was a reactive greyhound with a high prey drive and through her I was introduced to training through games, which forms the basis of my training methods today.
