Today, like most Mondays, was a busy start to the week with 3 1:1s, a ton of assessment calls, and 5 puppy classes!
We started the day in Sunderland dog training a lovely New Zealand Huntaway. For those that don’t know what this is, it’s a breed that works alongside border collies in a push-pull fashion, collies bring the sheep in, huntaways drive them out. They do this by barking though, and they are bred to be very vocal. This can be an issue in homes where we want some peace and quiet! We are giving Sonny alternative behaviours to do instead of barking in all the areas where he’s is being vocal.
Next, we headed over to do some dog training in Wallsend with Kody the Tibetan Spaniel. Tibetan spaniels aren’t very spaniel-like at all, as they are a companion/lapdog breed. Kody is anxious about other dogs, mainly big ones like German shepherds and huskies. Kody will react at dogs at a huge difference when in the car, easily 200 yards! We put in counter-conditioning methods and some management for in the car and house.
Teddie the American Cocker Spaniel. For this, we were back in South Shields. Teddie has some hyper attachment issues with one of his guardians and acts up when he is with them. He really pulls on the lead, can get aggressive with people and dogs, and just ignores her, with everyone else in the house, he is fine. We focused on giving predictable behaviours and building both his and his guardians' confidence so that they can work as a team and help each other.
All the dogs today did awesomely and will be sorted in no time!
